A plain guide to Meta's agent

What is Meta Muse?

Muse is a personal AI agent from Meta. You give it a task or a goal, and it works on it in its own cloud computer. It keeps going after you close the app. By default, it asks before it sends, and it always asks before it buys.

What can Muse do?

Muse takes on errands and chores you would do in a browser or an app. It tells you when it needs you.

  • It has its own cloud computer with a browser. It can fill out forms, book things and watch for price drops. You can watch it work and take over at any time.
  • It runs tasks on a schedule, like a check-in each morning or a summary each week.
  • It uses the apps you connect, like your email, calendar and Instagram. Meta calls these Connectors.
  • It makes files for you, like documents, spreadsheets, images and small web tools.
  • On a Mac, it can sort your files and read Messages, Notes, Mail and Calendar, if you allow it.

How much does Muse cost?

Muse is free with a weekly usage limit. When you hit the limit, you wait for it to refresh or pay for more. The Power plan costs $20 a month and the Maximum plan costs $100 a month. Meta lists more usage as the only thing the paid plans add. See Muse's plans and limits.

Who can use Muse?

You need to live in the US or Canada and be 18 or older. You log in with a Meta account. If you don't have one, you can make one with Facebook, Instagram, an email or a phone number. Muse runs on iPhone, Android, Mac, the web and WhatsApp. Meta doesn't list a Windows app.

How do you set it up?

  1. 1. Get the app or go to the site. Download Muse on your phone or Mac, or open muse.ai. Log in with your Meta account.
  2. 2. Connect your apps. Ask Muse in the chat, like "Connect my Gmail", or go to Settings, then Connectors. Facebook and Instagram connect on their own if they share your Accounts Center.
  3. 3. Check what it may do alone. Open Settings, then Permissions. Pick when Muse must ask you before it acts.
  4. 4. Check your data settings. Muse uses your chats for training unless you turn that off. Go to Settings, then Data controls.

What does Muse ask about first?

By default, Muse asks before it sends a message, buys something or shares your info with a connected app. When it asks, you can allow it once, for this task, for this site, or always. You can also say no.

Every purchase needs your OK, every time. Meta suggests a Link card for each one. It works only for that store, that amount and a short time. You can't undo some steps, like an email that has gone out, so read before you approve.

Go slow with "always". One seller let Muse always answer his Facebook Marketplace buyers. It took a lowball offer and sent his home address without asking him. Meta says Muse followed his settings. Engadget suggests you pick "Always ask" at first, in Settings, then Permissions. Loosen it once you trust a task.

How do you stop a task?

Deleting the app does not stop Muse. It works in the cloud, so its tasks keep running. One user deleted the app for a few days. When he came back, Muse had posted a report on his email every day.

To see what is running, tap the Assistant icon, then Upcoming. To stop a task, tell Muse, like "Cancel my Monday check-in". To cut off an app, go to Settings, then Connectors. Meta says some of what Muse learned may stay in its memory after that.

How does Muse remember things?

Muse keeps notes about you in files you can read and change. Tap the Assistant icon, then Identity, to see its Memory and Soul. Soul holds its personality and its limits. Ask it to forget a topic and it removes it as best it can.

Coming from ChatGPT or another assistant? Download your data there. Then in Muse, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Import memory, and upload the .zip file.

What do people use it for?

Early users and reviewers report these jobs most often.

  • Bills and refunds. Muse reads old receipts in your email and finds subscriptions you forgot and refunds you missed.
  • Inbox clean-up. It unsubscribes you from spam, deletes old promos and drafts replies for you to approve.
  • Shopping. It compares prices and fills in checkout, then waits for your OK. Some reviewers find it slower than doing it yourself.
  • Briefings and watches. It sends a summary each morning or tracks a flight price on a schedule.
  • Bookings, Marketplace sales and school deadlines.

What task should you give it?

Start with something that repeats and costs you money or time. Muse can run it on a schedule and tell you only when something changes.

“Every Monday at 8am, look through my email for receipts, renewals and new charges from the past week. Make a short list of anything that looks new, doubled or higher than before. Do not cancel, reply or buy anything. Ask me first. Confirm what you will check and when.”

What can't Muse do yet?

  • It doesn't have its own email address yet.
  • Calls to businesses are only a test. Meta has not rolled them out to everyone.
  • It can't shop on Amazon. Amazon blocks it, and some other sites do too.
  • It doesn't work outside the US and Canada yet.
  • On a Mac, full control of any app is still rolling out.
