A plain guide to ChatGPT dots
What are OpenAI dots?

What can a dot do?
A dot checks things on a schedule, watches for changes, and tells you when it needs you.
- It has its own cloud computer and browser, so it keeps working when your laptop is off.
- It uses the apps you connect, like Gmail, Google Drive and GitHub. OpenAI says dots can reach over 4,000 apps through plugins.
- You can talk to it in ChatGPT, in Slack, or on a voice call. Microsoft Teams is in an early test.
- It can use your own computer too, if you allow it. That starts turned off.
How much do dots cost?
Your first dot comes with ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost. Pro comes in three tiers at $100, $200 or $500 a month, and all three include a dot. A Business Premium seat is $125 a month, or $100 a month when you pay for a year.
Chats with your dot do not count toward your ChatGPT limits. Tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do count. OpenAI has not shared a price for extra dots yet.
Can Plus users get one?
Not yet. OpenAI's pricing page lists dots for Pro only. Free, Go and Plus don't include them. Business Premium, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces can get them too.
Who can use a dot?
OpenAI is rolling out dots to ChatGPT Pro users who are 18 or older. Pro users in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland can't get one yet. Business Premium users get dots in every region ChatGPT supports. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces get a beta that an admin must turn on. Access can take a few days to reach your account. How do you set one up?
- 1. Open ChatGPT on desktop. Go to chatgpt.com/dots in a desktop browser or app. You can't create a dot on your phone yet.
- 2. Follow the intro. Connect apps like email, calendar and files, or skip that for now. Access to your own computer is optional and starts turned off.
- 3. Name it. You can change its name and look later from its profile.
- 4. Give it one clear job. Say what to check, when to check it, and when to ask you first. Ask it to repeat the plan back to you.
- 5. Set your rules. Add Custom Rules for what it may do alone and what needs your OK.
How do you set its rules?
You use Custom Rules to choose when your dot can act. On desktop, open Settings, then Personalization, then Custom rules under Permissions. Describe the action, then pick how your dot should handle it: go ahead, wait until you say so, ask you first, or hand the step to you.
Your dot can't change a password or move money between bank accounts. You do those yourself. If you ask it to draft a reply, it still can't send that reply without you.
What job should you give it?
Start with work you already check again and again. Ask your dot to watch a project deadline, prep you for tomorrow's meetings, or track open client questions. A good job, or prompt, names the source, the repeat check, and what needs your OK.
“Each weekday morning, check the project plan and the emails I connect for new dates or unanswered questions. Tell me what needs my decision. Draft replies for my review, but do not send them. Ask me before you change the plan. Confirm what you will check and when.”

What can't a dot do yet?
- You get one dot. OpenAI says more will come later.
- You can't set one up on your phone. You can message it there after setup, once your app has the update.
- It can't have its own email address. It uses yours if you connect it.
- It can't call you, but you can call it.
- You can't see or edit its saved notes one by one. A reset wipes them all.
- If it uses your computer, the ChatGPT app must stay open and online.
How do dots compare?
Meta Muse and Grok Bot are agents like dots. Muse has a free plan. Grok Bot lets you run many bots at once. A dot comes with ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium and works in ChatGPT and Slack. See dots, Muse and Grok Bot side by side.
